Unhappy events abroad have retaught us two simple truths about the liberty of a democratic people. The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of a private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism – ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. I, for one, chose not to celebrate Independence Day yesterday for I am not proud but, instead, am ashamed of our country and for what it now stands for. I did not fly or honor our flag but, instead, avoided the patriotic parades and fireworks and, instead, retreated into quiet solitude, reading and conversations with friends.
A deep melancholy permeated my being for I now fully realize, particularly after Bush's commuting of Libby's prison time, that America is now a fascist state ~ for our government is owned by a private cabal of neocon fanatics whose power is now stronger than the Democratic state itself.
The similarity with Germany in the 1930"s is unavoidable for the people and their representatives were also cowed by fear and willingly gave away their power to a small group of Nazi fanatics and their vision of aryan supremacy ~ much like our current neocon fascist vision of American supremacy.
Germany started its illegal blitzkrieg and WW2 by invading and occupying Poland in September of 1939 and America launched its illegal blitzkrieg and oil grab by invading and occupying Iraq in 2003 ~ and the world, in both cases, chose to look the other way.
